Wild Camping in the Slovenian Mountains

Sonny, the motorhome is enjoying a night of wild camping on a free Aire at Rogla Ski Resort (N46.45243 E15.33132), altitude 1517m in the Pohorje region of Slovenia.  No facilities, apart from electric which you can pay for via a coin machine - 50cents per kilowatt (kW).  Fairly cheap, so we have popped some brass in the machine so we can put the electric fire on tonight to keep us warm - so technically not wild camping then! However, it will only last a couple of hours and then we will be back to self-sufficiency, as we have got plenty of gas to run everything and we are full of water - so all is good!

Leaving Ljubljana we headed for Celje, skirting around the Slovenian Alps.

and passed a lot of hop plants growing in the fields.

We spent a night in Celje, it was just a little car park with 2 motorhome spaces with electric, water, chemical toilet and grey waste for €8, but gave us a chance to look around the old town  The town is quite small, but has a castle on the hill and an old church with a covered stair-passage to the top of it.  We last came across this feature in Sighisoura (Romania), and they were built to protect churchgoers on their climb up to the church in wintertime.

Mel catches a ride on Josip Pelikan's bike.  A photographer of Czech descent who lived most of his life in Celje and became the town's photo chronicler

This guy looks like he is sticking two fingers up at the world!
This morning we left Celje and headed for Rogla, it was only 27 miles (43 kms) but a slow and winding road up to the top, passing through some lovely alpine looking towns on the way.
It was 16°C when we left Celje and arriving at Rogla at 11.30am the temperature had dropped to 7°C and we were in the clouds - Brrrr!  We had some lunch and the sun came out and it warmed up a bit to 11°C, although with the sun out it did feel warmer.
The resort is massive, and the workmen were out and about working on it to get it ready for the winter season.

Ski runs at Rogla

We are parked near this little lake, where you can play 'get the wooden peg into the hole'.  As you can imagine we had endless fun with this one!

Some fantastic tree carvings around the ski resort
We took a stroll through the forest and came across this tower, which Mel insisted on climbing.  With my fear of heights I just watched from the bottom.

We ended up part walking up a red/black run and came across another ski lift - the views were lovely
As the poster says 'Life is beautiful' up here in Rogla!

The only trouble is this time of year it is blimming cold!
